Led by Mississippi reared saxophonist George Cartwright, CURLEW is a showcase for a strong group of players: guitar hero Nicky Skopelitis acts as a lightning rod via his seething, super-speed riffs atop bassist Bill Laswell, drummer Bill Bacon's crash/burn like underpinnings, and the quirky cello of Tom Cora delights throughout. On the LIVE tracks drummer Denardo Coleman replaces Bacon. And the drummer's famous father, Ornette, shines as an obvious influence on the band's punchy, harmolodic choruses.
